How Do I Use the Shure VP88 for M/S Stereo?

Date:2020/3/4 16:23:43 Hits:

Q: I don’t quite understand how the Shure VP88 microphone works for mid-side recording. How do I get the left/right part of the “side” out?

A: You can use the VP88 in two ways, either with an external mid-side matrix or with the mic’s internal M/S matrix. There is a four position switch for configuring this on the mic body. Here is what the four positions do:

MS — the VP88’s internal M/S matrix is bypassed. The “mid” signal is routed to the red connector on the VP88 cable, the “side” signal is routed to the green connector. An external mid-side matrix is required to create the final stereo signal and to control the mid versus side balance.

Stereo L (Low) — uses the VP88’s internal mid-side matrix to generate a stereo output signal where the “side” level is 6dB lower than the “mid” level. This results in a narrower stereo field.

Stereo M (Medium) — uses the VP88’s internal mid-side matrix to generate a stereo output signal where the “side” level is 1.9dB lower than the “mid” level. This provides a wider stereo field and more ambience pickup.

Stereo H (High) — uses the VP88’s internal mid-side matrix to generate a stereo output signal where the “side” level is 1.6dB higher than the “mid” level. This results in a wide stereo field and the most ambience pickup.
