Piano Mechanical Noise

Date:2020/3/4 14:47:45 Hits:

Q: I’m miking a piano using a pair of condenser mics placed in the piano, back from the hammers, but I’m getting a lot of mechanical noise from the piano itself, which is audible in the track especially as the keys are released. How can I remedy this?

A: Pianos, like all instruments, do make some mechanical noise along with the desired notes they produce — in most cases this isn’t a problem. However, if the noise is offensive, the piano may need service. You may also need to consider using a different microphone technique, that allows you to place the mics farther from the hammers and mechanism. If you’re looking for alternatives, our Piano Miking Summit is a great place to start!
