DAW Tip: Filter out MIDI “Ghost Notes”

Date:2020/2/7 19:47:11 Hits:

When you record a live MIDI track into your DAW, a brush of your finger, a slight hesitation, or a software glitch might create one or more extra “ghost notes” that have either very low velocities or super-short durations — the ghost note might not even be audible.

Often you won’t catch ghost notes until you see the MIDI data displayed in your DAW. Especially if you can’t hear them, it might be tempting to not worry about ghost notes, and just leave them in. Don’t give into that temptation! Those little notes can cause havoc. They can cut off voices of a synthesizer, accidentally trigger sidechains, create low-end mud that you can “feel” more than hear, and so on. Best to get rid of them.

The easiest way to remove ghost notes is to use your DAW’s filter/search/MIDI note transformation function (nearly every DAW has one), which will let you search for MIDI notes with velocities and durations under a certain limit, and then either select or select and delete them all. But even if your DAW doesn’t have an easy command for filtering ghost notes, you can still manually go through your sequence and eyeball your notes to find those that should be deleted. This might be time consuming, but it will be worth it.
