What is a GSM Channel Bank?

A GSM Channel bank (a.k.a. GSM Gateway) is a device that converts digital E1 / T1 PRI voice channels into GSM voice channels. It supports up to 23 voice channels in the case of T1 and 30 voice channels if E1 applies. The GSM channel bank is most commonly used to link between ISDN E1/T1 PRI trunks and the GSM networks for reducing call costs.

The GSM Channel Bank diverts calls to and from fixed lines to the GSM mobile networks in order to take advantage of the lower tariff rates for mobile calls. It turns the fixed to mobile calls into cheaper mobile to mobile calls (M2M) through SIM cards and Least Cost Routing applications.

For Call Termination: The GSM Channel Bank is used to terminate in-bound and out-bound call traffic from ISDN (PRI), Analog Fixed networks, or VoIP directly into the GSM wireless networks in order to reduce the call termination rates. Lower-cost minute-based allotments offered by different SIM cards can be exploited using a GSM Channel Bank with LCR functions. When connected to alternative carrier's equipment/networks, the GSM Channel Bank increases profits for Call Termination Vendors.

Within an Enterprise: The GSM Channel Bank connects the PBX/PABX directly to the GSM networks and routes incoming and outgoing calls via LCR applications to the mobile telephone network, thus providing a cost-effective alternative for fixed-to-mobile or mobile-to-fixed telephone calls. When a number beginning with a GSM prefix is detected or dialed, the GSM Channel Bank automatically routes the call via the cheapest GSM network.

A common practice of a GSM operator is to offer special rate concession to its subscribers for calling Mobile Numbers that are within the same network of the GSM operator in various forms such as: one flat rate for calling any Mobile Number within the GSM network; or special discounted rates for calling Mobile Numbers that are within the GSM network.

Count of minutes: Gateway will counter time of outgoing calls.
Count of calls: Gateway will counter number of outgoing calls.
By time --- SIM cards will be switched according to standby time
Time of use SIM ---- Interval of using selected SIM card.
Random --- SIM cards will be switched at random time.
