What is X-Y Coincident Pair Microphone Placement?

Date:2020/3/7 10:30:34 Hits:

Q: What is X-Y coincident pair microphone placement?

A: This is a very popular way to record acoustic guitars, among other acoustic instruments. It’s a classic Nashville recording technique, although it’s popular all over. To set this up, you’ll need two (preferably identical) microphones with cardioid polar patterns placed as close together as possible, but with their capsules at a 90-degree angle from one other. Place the two mics around a foot from the acoustic guitar (or other sound source). Point one of the microphones toward the soundhole of the acoustic guitar, and another toward the neck/body join. Record each mic to its own track, balance levels as desired, and pan opposite each other to taste. Voila! Instant stereo depth.

There are also stereo microphones available with this set up, where two mic capsules are integrated into one mic body. One nice example is the Rode NT4 shown here.
