How Far Apart Should I Place Stereo Microphones?

Date:2020/3/7 10:24:05 Hits:

Q: How far apart do two microphones need to be when using A-B stereo microphone technique?

A: A-B stereo miking, or “spaced pair” microphone technique as it is often called, relies on two microphones being placed far enough apart so that the source sound reaches each mic at a slightly different time. This time difference creates a stereo effect. If the microphones are too close together, there won’t be enough time differential between the two mics, and either no stereo image or a very narrow stereo image will be captured. In general, a distance of spacing the microphones 3 to 10 feet apart is enough to capture a nice, wide stereo image.
