DAW Tip: Colorize Your Tracks

Regardless of your DAW of choice, they all offer you the ability to color to your tracks and mixer channels. Usually, they’ll impart a basic color of their own, such as red for audio tracks, and blue for MIDI tracks, etc. Some DAW users never explore the use of color any further than that, either because they don’t want to bother, or they’re worried they’ll make their DAW look like a candy store window.

Colorizing your tracks can be a very valuable tool in organizing your song. For example, you could give a unique color to different instrument groups, so that all vocals are green, all guitars are red, all drums are yellow, and so on. This way, you could see at a glance exactly what plays when in your song. Another possibility is to color tracks based on how much you like a given track. For example, you could color your favorite guitar harmony take blue, your second favorite take green, your third favorite take orange, etc.

And remember, you can use shading as well. So if you choose to color by instrument, you could color lead vocals dark green, backup vocals light green, lead guitars dark red, rhythm guitars light red, and so on. Or you could shade based on your favorites, so your keeper guitar tracks are dark red, your keeper vocal tracks are dark green, and so on. Judicious use of colorizing your tracks can help you understand your song at a glance — its worth doing!
