Fix It Before the Mix

Date:2020/3/7 10:03:16 Hits:

How many times have you heard an engineer (or yourself!) say, “We’ll fix it in the mix.” Smoothing over a rough patch in a song during mixdown is something we’ve all done — and there’s nothing wrong with that. But consider making “fix it in the mix” your last resort for solving a problem, not the first option you turn to when you hear something you don’t like.

Remember: Practice makes perfect. With virtually unlimited tracks in our DAWs, it’s tempting to play something differently but sloppily a bunch of times, and then simply call the take you like best “the one.” But that’s a sure road to needing to fix it in the mix. Better to find the take you like best, and rather than call that the final recording, rehearse that part the way you liked it, and re-record it when you can record it the way you want it. This goes for full band recordings, too — if you’re jamming to explore arrangements, rehearse the arrangement you like until it’s solid.

The tools and technology we use to make and record music today let us take lots of short cuts — but not all of them result in a better song. Nothing beats learning your instrument and practicing your parts, whether you’re playing with a group of musicians or alone in your studio. If you get all your parts solid and tight, you’ll find mixing to be easier, and your songs to be better!
