How to Place Your Monitors Around Your Audio Workstation

Date:2020/3/7 9:56:29 Hits:

Proper acoustics is a science. Adjusting the acoustics for bright and dead spots, soundproofing your project studio, and more all go into creating the optimal listening environment. However, the reality is that many musicians have their audio workstations stuck in a corner of a multi-purpose room, or even bedroom, and don’t have the option of acoustic treatment.

Thankfully, there’s one change you can make that is free, and makes a significant difference. You may not have much leeway in where your audio workstation is set up, but you can at least determine where your speakers are in relation to each other, and to you. And that alone can make a world of difference to how you hear your tracks.

You don’t need any special tools for this, although a tape measure is helpful (you can use a string if you don’t have one). You’ll want to make sure that each speaker is the same distance from you, and also the same distance from each other, making an equilateral triangle. If you have a very large desk, or a large computer monitor in between them, that means you’ll have to place your speakers farther from each other, and you’ll have to be farther back for optimal listening. The point of this is that you want sound reaching each ear at the same time. This little change doesn’t make up for acoustic problems with a room, but it’s a simple trick to get the most out what you have.
