Do MOTU AVB Interfaces require a Thunderbolt Mac to work?

Date:2020/3/6 11:56:33 Hits:

Q: Do the MOTU AVB interfaces, such as the 1248, require a Thunderbolt Mac to work, or will my older Mac work okay?

A: Audio Video Bridging (AVB) is a networking protocol standard, more technically known as IEEE 802.1, which allows for a lot of audio tracks and precise synching. Because of this, it’s becoming a popular protocol for expandable systems utilizing high track count audio interfaces. MOTU has been a pioneer in expandable systems with high track count interfaces, and makes an entire range of interfaces that support the AVB protocol. Since the Thunderbolt protocol, available on all modern Macs, allows for extremely fast transfer rates and high track counts, it made sense that MOTU would support Thunderbolt with all of their AVB interfaces.

However, if you have a Windows PC or Mac without Thunderbolt, but you still want to take advantage of the expandability and large track counts possible with an AVB network, you’re in luck! Nearly all MOTU interfaces with AVB also support the cross-platform USB 2.0 protocol, which allows for a high track count to your DAW.
