Vocal Miking for the Singing Drummer

Date:2020/3/5 17:13:17 Hits:

Drummers who sing are not that unusual anymore. There were always a lot of drummers who sang but the perception was that they didn’t — or couldn’t — because they were behind a drum kit. There are a number of very famous artists who are singing drummers.

The biggest obstacle drummers face is choosing what kind of mic to use and where to put it. Here is an option that we’ve had good luck with:

Take a microphone boom stand, such as the Gator Frameworks GFW-MIC-2020 and add to that a simple gooseneck, such as the On-Stage Stands MSA9030 Gooseneck. Connect a Shure Beta56 to the gooseneck and you have a comfortable setup that is user friendly.

You can try different positions for placing the microphone. We’ve found one good setup is to place the mic stand directly behind the drummer and have the microphone come right over the top of his or her head. The gooseneck makes it easy to place the mic in front of the drummer’s mouth and he or she can also easily push the mic away when they are not singing.

Don’t be discouraged from singing just because you play the drums. It can be challenging but a lot of fun!
