The Not-so-quiet Health Benefits of Drumming

Date:2020/3/3 11:43:19 Hits:

It says it all right there in the title: Drumming is indeed good for your health! If you play on a drum kit or hand percussion, then you know how fast you can work up a sweat and push your muscles to the brink. But did you know that playing drums is great for your mental state? Playing the drums is a fantastic way to reduce stress and have fun. Drums and rhythm are used to help people with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, eating disorders, and many other things. Amazing breakthroughs in the field of neuroscience have proven that playing the drums stimulates the brain and produces deeper self-awareness. Drumming stimulates the brain by making both the left and right halves of your brain work at the same time in what is called “hemispheric coordination” or “synchronous brain activity.” These are just a few examples that show how powerful drums, rhythm, and music can be for your mind and body.

Circle Up
A really great way to tap into the power of drums and rhythm is by joining a drum circle. Drum circles can be good fun and a way to let yourself be free of all the crazy stuff that life throws at you. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, someone who has been playing for a few years, or a seasoned veteran. When you lock into a rhythm with a group of people, there is something magical that happens. You get lost in the rhythms, that synchronous brain activity starts to happen, and your creativity flows.

Drum circles are easy to find and happen all over the world. Here at Sweetwater, there is an open drum circle run by one of our Sweetwater Academy instructors on the first Tuesday of every month. If you live close to Fort Wayne, then come join in! I also found a great website for finding a drum circle close to you: Drumcircles.net/circlelist.html. It has listings for every state in the US plus lots of great resources for books, music to jam to, and other information.

Now that you know how playing drums can be good for your health, let’s get into gear to get you started. Djembes are originally from West Africa. They have a great sound and are easy to play. The Meinl African Rope-tuned Djembe is a beautiful instrument with a cracking sound. Don’t let the ropes scare you; they’re easy to adjust. There are also djembes made from other materials, such as the Remo Mondo Key-tuned Djembe. It is tuned using a regular drum key, sounds great, and comes in different sizes and colors.

Latin percussion instruments, such as congas and bongos, are fantastic instruments to have around for a drum circle, a live gig, or in the studio. The LP Aspire Series Conga Set is a great place to start. They sound great, look great, and come with a stand. If you don’t want to carry around full-sized congas, then look into the Pearl Travel Congas. They come in various head sizes just like regular congas but fit into a small travel bag that you can easily carry anywhere. There are also many flavors of bongos; Meinl Headliner Series Wood Bongos are a great place to start. They’re affordable drums made from the wood of sustainable rubber trees and have natural buffalo drumheads. If you want to step up, then the LP Galaxy Giovanni Series Bongos also have natural hide heads and beautiful ash shells. I have used these bongos many times, and they are fantastic. Other options include cajons, timbales, tambourines, shakers, cowbells, and all the other world-percussion instruments Sweetwater has to offer.

In closing, I want to reiterate how much fun and how good for your health drumming is. Even if you’ve never played a note in your life, you can find real joy in grabbing a drum and hitting it. You’ll get energized and may find a creative spark in yourself you didn’t know was there. So get out there and play! It’s good for you!
