It’s tempting to shop by comparing specifications. After all, better gear always has better specs, right? Specs can be tremendously informative and useful when making gear decisions. But specs aren’t everything. Especially these days, when the state of the art has improved to the point where even budget gear often has specs that rival far pricier equipment. Specs can tell you about performance limits, but not about the sound of a given piece of gear, or how easily you’ll be able to integrate it with your workflow, etc.

Our advice is to use gear specifications to ensure that a piece of gear matches your technical requirements, but also consider other factors, such as how you’ll be using the gear, your specific applications, and how it will fit into your studio or live rig and your workflow.
