How to Preserve Human Feel by Quantizing Sections of Tracks

Quantization is an amazing timing tool that can help you save a performance that’s generally great, but might have a few problem areas where there are noticeable timing discrepancies. When you have a track like this, it might be tempting to quickly turn quantize on for the entire track and lock everything down into rhythm. But over quantizing can suck the life out of a track and make it rigid/machine-like. Instead, go into your DAW’s note editor, select only the notes that need to be quantized the most (the ones that are the farthest out of time), and quantize just those notes. It might take you longer if you have a few sections in a longer track that you want to massage in this way, but it will be worth it. Your track will maintain the human feel of your performance, yet the trouble sections will be quantized to fit the pocket.
