Hottest New Mics of 2018

Date:2020/2/22 17:53:36 Hits:

Whether you’re recording in the studio or mixing front of house, 2018’s bumper crop of new microphones offers something for everyone. From cutting-edge technologies to cool new takes on vintage classics, there’s something for everyone. Let’s take a look at the hot new mics of 2018.

Neumann U 67

The legend is back! Launched in 1960 to replace the venerable U 47 as Neumann’s flagship large-diaphragm condenser microphone, the U 67 incorporated a new K 67 capsule and transformer-balanced tube circuit along with modern innovations that delivered significant sonic and operational improvements on its predecessor. The U 67’s high SPL handling, ruler-flat frequency response, detailed midrange, and sweet, velvety character with a hint of delicate airiness make it a first-call mic for drums, piano, acoustic and electric guitars, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and vocals. Factor in its highpass filter and 10dB pad, and no source is off-limits.

Chandler Limited TG

The Chandler Limited TG microphone is a solid-state large-diaphragm condenser microphone that carries forward the rich legacy of EMI Abbey Road Studios innovation. In addition to its cardioid and omni polar patterns, the TG Microphone employs a unique feature set consisting of an onboard Dual Tone System, EMI Tape Equalizer, 50Hz/90Hz highpass filter, 10dB pad, and outboard power supply to deliver unrivaled versatility and sonic character. Like many vintage mics, the TG Microphone’s full-power circuit, driven by a dedicated PSU — rather than 48-volt phantom power — is integral to its huge, lifelike sound, characterized by a depth and openness not commonly found in solid-state microphone designs.

AEA KU5A

With its dual-path labyrinth and end-address supercardioid polar pattern, the AEA KU5A breaks new ground in ribbon microphone technology by harking back to the original RCA BK5. At close range, the KU5A captures extended highs while retaining the smoothness you expect from a ribbon mic. As the KU5A’s internal components are extremely well protected, singers can get right up on the grille without damaging the ribbon element. The KU5A’s active electronics make for a perfect match with any preamp. With its robust build quality, the AEA KU5A is a great choice for everyday use on a wide range of instruments and vocals, both in the studio and on the road.

Lauten Audio LS-208

The Lauten Audio LS-208 is a large-diaphragm, front-address condenser microphone designed for studio, broadcast, and live applications. The LS-208’s broad frequency response, wide dynamic range, and robust SPL handling make it a great choice for capturing just about any instrument or voice with condenser-like quality. Onboard highpass and lowpass filters further enhance this mic’s remarkable versatility. The LS-208 ships with a custom spider shockmount, hard mount, foam windscreen, and road case.

Sennheiser AMBEO VR

Designed in collaboration with virtual reality producers, the Sennheiser AMBEO VR microphone records seamless, immersive audio that’s ideal for VR video productions. An ambisonic microphone with four matched KE 14 capsules in a tetrahedral array, the AMBEO VR’s specialized architecture captures the sound around it from a single point, for 360-degree spherical ambisonic sound that perfectly matches your VR video content. The Sennheiser AMBEO VR works with the included A-B encoder software plug-in to deliver B-format audio, which allows you to audition any direction from the microphone during playback.

Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset

You might wonder why we’re including a set of earphones in this list of hot new mics. Well, the Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset includes two amazing Sennheiser mics, one in each earpiece, for the sleekest method for capturing binaural stereo sound that we’ve seen. Just slip the earpieces into your ears, connect the Lightning connector to your iOS phone, and you’re ready to record stereo audio with shockingly unbelievable realism that you can use for videos or sound design. The mic preamps and digital converters come from industry-leading Apogee electronics. And the smart technology (available via the Apogee Smart Headset app) allows Situational Awareness (so you don’t feel isolated in your phones — great for runners and others who need to be aware while listening to music in public spaces) along with very effective noise cancellation. So what looks like just earphones is really much, much more.

sE Electronics sE7

sE Electronics bills their sE7 as “smooth, clear, fast, and precise.” We couldn’t agree more. This high-quality, small-diaphragm, back-electret condenser microphone is designed for a wide range of studio and stage scenarios. With its optimized acoustic design, discrete Class A circuitry, versatile attenuation and highpass switches, and a transformerless output, the sE7 delivers clear, natural sound at all frequencies on any source, with punchy lows and sweet, silky-smooth highs. The sE7’s discrete Class A signal path has no ICs or transformers, and this is key to its remarkably natural performance in capturing acoustic instruments such as guitar, piano, strings, woodwinds, and percussion.

Warm Audio WA-47

Their acclaimed, vintage-inspired gear has famously upset the pro audio price/performance ratio; so when Warm Audio turns its attention to the granddaddy of large-diaphragm tube condenser microphones, you know it has to be good. And so it is. The WA-47’s nine polar patterns — cardioid, omni, and figure-8; plus six in-between patterns — give you amazing flexibility when it comes to exploring different recording techniques. With its discrete, transformer-balanced vacuum tube circuitry and custom reproduction capsule, Warm Audio’s WA-47 nails the huge, bold sound of the beloved and revered ’47 — a sound heard on countless iconic recordings.

Royer R-10

You can rely on Royer for high-fidelity ribbon mics that stand up to daily use in critical studio and live sound applications, and the company has another hit with their R-10. The R-10 delivers a beautifully balanced sound field with a flat frequency response and an impressive maximum SPL of 160dB, so you can close-mic loud sources without fear of overload. The R-10 is a great choice for electric and acoustic guitars, brass, strings, drums, cymbals, piano, vocals, and more. Its figure-8 polar pattern also captures ambience beautifully, which makes it excellent for room miking. The Royer R-10 is a value-packed, state-of-the-art ribbon mic that deserves a place in your mic locker.

Audio-Technica AT5047

We were quite impressed with the AT5040, Audio-Technica’s first entry in their flagship studio microphone series. Released this year, the AT5047 ups the ante with a transformer-coupled output, greater dynamic range, and improved SPL handling. The AT5047 employs new technology and premium components to deliver high-definition audio with uncanny realism, depth, and presence. A-T’s innovative rectangular element combines four matched diaphragms together to create a single cohesive unit with a surface area twice the size of the usual 1″ circular diaphragm. Its ultra-fast transient response makes the AT5047 ideal for vocals and acoustic instruments such as piano, guitar, strings, and saxophone.

Shure Axient Digital

Shure’s groundbreaking Axient Digital wireless technology delivers world-class sound and maximum reliability — even in the most congested wireless environments — for mission-critical applications such as televised live performances and secure government installations. The AD2 handheld transmitter features two operation modes to optimize performance for any application: Standard mode provides maximum coverage, while High Density mode allows for greatly enhanced channel counts. The Axient AD4QUS 4-channel wireless receiver can assign up to four antennas to a single channel for enhanced coverage and signal quality. Axient’s Spectrum Manager provides advanced frequency scanning, which is displayed graphically and can even store the data from a site survey for later use. And with Frequency Diversity mode enabled, the AD4QUS receiver rejects RF interference that can cause audio interruptions in less sophisticated wireless systems.
