PRS and John Mayer Announce a New Vintage-inspired PRS

Date:2020/2/18 21:26:40 Hits:

If you’re a fan of classic American guitars, this new vintage-inspired PRS is about to make you really, really happy. More than two and a half years in the making, the PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and Grammy Award-winning guitarist John Mayer. This classic-styled instrument boasts a familiar double-cutaway shape, a just-right feel, and a sound that harkens back to the coveted American-made single-coil-equipped guitars of yesteryear.

These amazing instruments are designed around a classic PRS DC3 body that Paul and John tweaked over and over again until they were 100% happy with it. The guitar’s pickguard went through a similar metamorphosis. A trademark PRS lower-horn scoop was also added, along with an eye-grabbing contrasting tone. But enough about the looks; the Silver Sky was built to be played — and it doesn’t disappoint. Its bolt-on neck contains elements derived from several of John’s early-’60s instruments to create an amalgamated vintage carve with a 25.5″ scale length and 7.25″ radius. It features a rosewood fingerboard with 22 custom-sized frets, which fall somewhere between classic vintage and modern PRS frets. The end result is a highly playable neck that’s a joy to wrap your hand around.

Everything that touches a guitar’s strings affects its tone, and the Silver Sky takes it to the max with top-shelf parts. A bone nut, for starters, promotes increased sustain and enhanced response. Vintage-style tuners look cool but are notoriously unreliable. That’s why the Silver Sky’s traditional closed-back tuners have been outfitted with modern locking mechanisms. The Silver Sky’s inverted PRS-style headstock has been modified to accommodate John’s playing style and to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which improves intonation. It also features a PRS double-action truss rod with easy-access adjustments at the front of the headstock.

The Silver Sky’s high-quality electronics ensure that it sounds as impressive as it looks and feels. Patterned after vintage single-coils, its three pickups deliver everything you’d want from a classic early-’60s American electric guitar, including round lows, glassy highs, and chiming harmonics. They sound great clean, and they sound incredible in front of a dirty amp. You’ll find that they exhibit a higher signal to noise ratio than true vintage pickups, along with better note definition. They also offer noise-canceling technology in the in-between positions and superior consistency from pickup to pickup. The tone controls are also a bit different: the center knob controls the bass and middle pickups together, while the rear tone control handles the treble pickup.

At first glance, the Silver Sky looks like it’s equipped with a standard vintage tremolo, but looks can be deceiving. This classic-style steel tremolo features PRS’s unthreaded trem arm with adjustable playing position and Gen III knife-edge screws to ensure a reliable return to pitch. John also requested that the Silver Sky’s tremolo rest flush against the guitar’s body in a neutral position, so that it only goes down in pitch. This added contact between the bridge and body increases the guitar’s acoustic resonance, thereby improving the signal to noise ratio of its pickups.

Anyone in search of a classic double-cutaway electric owes it to themselves to check out the PRS Silver Sky. It truly takes features spanning 50-plus years, picks the best of them, and combines them into a single vintage-influenced instrument. This axe has it all: looks, playability, and sound. Not to mention, it was built by Paul Reed Smith to John Mayer’s exact specifications (and we’ve heard that those two guys know a thing or two about guitars).
