How to Prepare for an Outdoor Gig

Date:2020/2/10 18:26:52 Hits:

You already know that an outdoor gig has no walls or ceiling. The main effect that walls have is that they contain the soundwaves you project. Without walls, you may find that your amps don’t project nearly as far as you thought they would. However, before you buy a 200W amplifier, consider investing in a more powerful PA system. You can then mic up or plug in every instrument that needs extra help projecting — including drums, if you’re playing a venue where they’re not projecting far enough.

Another thing to be wary of is low end. Indoors, low end tends to bounce around, which gives the sound a lot of beef; outdoors, lows dissipate. But that’s not an invitation to pump the lows to thermonuclear! In fact, outdoors you may find that the best way to project bass sounds is cranking the midrange. The higher frequencies of the bass spectrum won’t dissipate as quickly as the lowest frequencies, and midrange may be your ticket to a nice, tight low end.

Finally, if you’ve ever been thinking about going with a wireless and in-ear system, an outdoor venue is often the perfect application. First, outdoor venues often have larger stages, so having wireless and/or in-ear monitors means you won’t need massive lengths of cables to plug in all your monitors and equipment. But also, just as projecting sound to the audience is a problem, using wedges to fill the stage can also be problematic, depending on the size of the stage and weather conditions. In-ear monitors take care of this issue, and give you more consistent monitors wherever you are on stage.
