Modulate Sample Start for Better Synth Sounds

Date:2020/2/10 15:28:08 Hits:

If you’re looking for a simple way to make a sample-based synthesizer patch more dynamic, try modulating the sample start using velocity. If the sample has a powerful and punchy attack transient, modulate the sample start in reverse via velocity, so that the harder you play, the more of the attack transient comes through.

This simple modulation will give your patch a more tactile sound and feel, as your performance dynamics will directly be controlling how each note “hits” initially. You can dial the modulation amount to taste, so that this can be a subtle effect, or a drastic effect determining how much of the attack portion of the sample you’ll hear.

Give this technique some time and let it bring your patches to life!
