10 Studio Essentials That Won't Break the Bank

Date:2020/1/4 17:26:16 Hits:

I frequently run across fairly inexpensive items that ??I just can??t live without?? in the studio. In fact, I think I spend more money on smaller utility or one-trick-pony items than I do on the larger, more expensive stuff. This time around, I??ve got 10 things that don??t break the bank but always seem to come in handy.

PreSonus FaderPort

The PreSonus FaderPort offers mouse-free control over many features of your DAW, including window selection, pan/solo/mute/record enable of any track, and a long-throw fader that allows for writing automation to any single track or grouped tracks. Even more fun, a footswitch jack allows hands-free punch in/out ?? a blessing for those who record solo.

Telefunken TDA-2

A great problem-solver, Telefunken??s TDA-2 active stereo DI is perfect for both live and studio applications. The TDA-2 is extremely rugged, with the sonic integrity you??ve come to expect ?from Telefunken.

Shure SM7B

You??ve heard people describe a mic as ??great ?? for the money.?? Well, Shure??s SM7B is one of the all-time great vocal mics regardless of what it costs, and it??s very affordable. Try it for voice-overs or lead vocals. You??ll be amazed.

Ebtech Swizz Army

No studio should be without a multifunction cable tester, and the Ebtech Swizz Army is not only affordable but also one of the best available. You can test XLR, 1/4??, RCA, 1/8??, TT, and MIDI connections; check for intermittent connections; and it even has test tones to use when troubleshooting other gear. It??s the perfect utility tool.

IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors

IK Multimedia??s iLoud Micro Monitors are some of my favorite affordable 2-way active monitors. They??re compact and a perfect addition to a small studio or DAW workstation.

Ampeg SCR-DI

A bass DI for both live and studio use, the Ampeg SCR-DI produces tones ranging from the classic warmth of a Portaflex cabinet to the power of a full-on SVT. Dial in the EQ and then use the Scrambler Overdrive circuit to add the perfect amount of grunge to your sound.

Orange Micro Dark

The Orange Micro Dark 20-watt amp head is perfect for practice, rehearsals, and those gigs where you don??t have to play louder than a 747. Weighing less than 3 lbs., the Micro Dark is a portable amp with a simple 3-knob interface that lets you dial in tones ranging from clean and warm to heavy.

D'Addario NYXL

D'Addario has come up with a winning line with their NYXL strings. They sound great, stay in tune, and last for a long time. Both the guitar and the bass NYXL strings have an enhanced midrange, adding punch and clarity that you didn??t know your instrument had.

Shure SRH840

Shure??s SRH840 closed-back headphones provide the isolation that??s required in the studio. They sound good, are comfortable when worn for long periods of time, and even come with a set of replacement earpads ensuring a long and useful life.

Meinl Percussion Luis Conte Artist Series Shaker

Use them on live gigs or in the studio. These Meinl shakers blend well with other instruments while still cutting through ?? one of the best general-use shakers I??ve come across.
