Got the Backline Blues?

Date:2020/1/4 16:34:11 Hits:

Some performers don’t mind playing gigs in which all the acts are expected to share the same backline. Others get twitchy if they can’t use their own beloved, trusted gear, and are forced to rely on supplied speakers and amps. With backline, you’re at the mercy of promoter- or venue-supplied gear; you might get a killer amp or you might get a dud. If you’re one of those that prefers the safety and sound of your own equipment but you are expected to use the provided backline at a gig, don’t worry, you still have options.

The key is to keep your tone self-contained in the gear that you are bringing with you to the gig, and just using the backline amp(s) to cleanly make that tone louder. For example, you might “profile” your rig using a Kemper Profiling Amp, and just plug that into the provided backline amp. You might also bring a pedalboard with you that has all your favorite pedals used to create your tone, and again, simply use the backline to make your tone louder.

Another option is a guitar processor, such as the Line 6 Helix. Plug your pedalboard (with an amp sim pedal or modeling processor) right into the front of a clean amp — or even straight into the PA — and there’s your tone, rightr. Your tone is no longer at the mercy of the backline gear, and you have your familiar sound right at your feet!
