Should I Upgrade the Pots and Wiring in My Guitar?

Date:2020/1/4 16:32:32 Hits:

In most cases, the stock electronics in an electric guitar or bass function just fine. When should you consider upgrading?

1. If there’s a problem — scratchy pots, loss of high frequencies when turning down, volume or tone taper that isn’t smooth, and so on — then an upgrade may improve the instrument.
2. You’d like to try different potentiometer or capacitor values for the volume and tone controls, which can affect the tone of the pickups.
3. You’re installing new pickups (such as active pickups) and they require certain values for the potentiometers.
4. You’re looking to eke every bit of tone from your instrument by upgrading to premium electronics, such as those from Emerson Custom.

A word of warning: Installing electronics into a guitar is a good DIY project if you have the necessary skills. Just be sure you’re comfortable with soldering and electronic components before attempting any such work yourself. If you’re not confident of your abilities, seek out a professional guitar tech to do the work for you.
