Does the Novation Launchkey Support Bus Power with iPad?

Q: The Novation Launchkey says that it supports bus power with the iPad, but I can’t get it to work. When I plug it in, I get a message that says, “Accessory unavailable, the attached accessory uses too much power.”

A: As with many USB devices, you need to use an Apple Camera Connection Kit with the Novation Launchkey (whether the 25-, 49-, or 61-key version) when connecting it to an iPad. The order that you connect the three components matters; if you connect them out of order, you’ll get the power message and bus power won’t work. Here’s the proper order for connecting a Launchkey, Camera Connection Kit, and iPad together:

1. Plug your USB cable into the back panel of the Launchkey.
2. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the Camera Connection Kit.
3. Plug the Camera Connection Kit into the iPad.

Bus power should now work fine!
