More Kenyans Now Own a TV set-top-box
by KENNEDY KANGETHE
NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – The penetration of digital television Set Top Boxes (STB) in Kenya had grown by eight percent by December 2015, compared to July 2015 according a survey by Geopoll.
The survey indicates that 71 percent of those with TV sets owned a set top box in December, up from the 63 percent who owned a set top box in July 2015.
In Nairobi, which was the first area to transition to digital transmission, 79 percent now own a set top box, which is a seven percent increase from July 2015.
According to the study, the number of people paying a monthly subscription fee to access tv increased to 70 percent in December 2015 from 62 percent recorded in July 2015.
GoTV remains the most prevalent model of STB at 41 percent compared to 24 percent who own a Star Times box.
“The study also found that 46 percent of respondents are planning to buy a second decoder, with respondents citing monthly costs and the desire to have additional channels as reasons they would purchase a second decoder,” the reports states.
Surfing for new channels has dropped from a high of 67 percent in March 2015 with now about 55 percent of respondents indicating that they are still exploring new channels as of December 2015.
According to the report, 45 percent of those who have not yet switched to digital indicated they had not made the switch because it was too expensive.
“This percentage has declined since March, possibly due to increasingly affordable STBs: in March 58 percent said they hadn’t switched over because set top boxes were too expensive,” the survey indicates.
