How to Hook Up a TV to a Stereo Receiver

By James Clark

A stereo receiver connected to at least one pair of speakers may increase the sound quality of television programming when hooked up to a TV. The stereo can be used in tandem with (or as a substitute for) the TV's built-in speakers. A standard stereo cable with 1/4-inch phono plugs on each end is the only extra equipment needed to connect the stereo with the TV. The two plugs on each end are color-coded for simple connections.

Things You'll Need

•Stereo cables

Instructions

1.Unplug the electrical cords for both components from the wall outlets.

2.Insert the two audio plugs on one end of the stereo cable into the two audio output jacks on the back of the TV. The red plug connects to the right jack and the other plug connects to the left. Follow this color-code to avoid crossing the stereo signal.

3.Plug in the cables on the other end to a set of audio inputs on the stereo receiver.

4.Plug in the electrical cords and turn on the receiver's power button, then dial the component selector knob on the front panel to the set of jacks connecting the component to the TV, for example the auxiliary jacks.

Tips & Warnings

•Unplug the stereo receiver and TV from the power while connecting the audio cables.
