FM transmitter, which gives us better sound and upsets less people around us

OTTUMWA — It's next to impossible to drive past Bridge City TV and Appliance anytime after dark this December without noticing the dazzling, dancing light display. Since moving the store to Main Street over three years ago, owner Chris McKeag has been adding on to their homemade display every year.

"When we moved downtown our business grew and we wanted people to come downtown," said McKeag. "We wouldn't be able to grow without all of the support within the town and surrounding areas, so this was a way to say, 'Thank you.'"

The show sequences are developed with a software program McKeag has on his computer. This display boasts eight songs that lasts approximately 35 minutes. Driving by, listeners can hear Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and other Christmas tunes. This year, viewers can tune in to 95.5 FM to experience the lights and synchronized sound come together.

"Normally we pipe the volume out of the speakers outside of the building but we decided to try an FM transmitter, which gives us better sound and upsets less people around us," said McKeag.

According to McKeag, Whirlpool helped with this year's display as did four other employees. With the installation of a new roof, it took them two months to create.

"Normally, we leave the displays up on the roof and just add on to it, but it took longer this year because everything had to go down because of the new roof," said McKeag.

The two arches that flank either side of the towering Christmas trees boasts 1,700 lights on each.

The light display is a 'pretty labor intensive' effort put on by McKeag and his crew.

"I work on bits and pieces here and there," said McKeag. "And there is also a lot of math involved."

With the growing popularity of the lights, McKeag has extended the display hours from 5 p.m.- midnight every night through the end of the year.

"Be on the lookout in the near future for special elf hanging around near Bridge City," said McKeag. "He will be out soon before you know it."

As for the future, McKeag said expect the display to be a big surprise that will be better than the year before.
