How to Convert WMV to H.264

Date:2015/12/23 12:14:56 Hits:

By Andrew Schrader

H.264 files are compression settings pertaining to the common MPEG-4 video standards. WMV, or Windows Media Videos, are also popular video file types, although PC users may find it difficult to convert their WMVs in Windows Media Player. VLC, a free program provided by Videolan, is a multiplatform audio and video transcoder that can convert several audio/video types across Mac and PC platforms, including WMV to H.264. Note that any audio/video conversions or compressions can result in loss of audio/video quality.

Things You'll Need

VLC Player

Instructions

1.Download and install VLC Player (see link in Resources). Agree to the licensing terms and open the program.

2.Click on "File" in the VLC toolbar. Select "Open File..." to locate your input WMV. Click "OK."

3.Open the "Streaming/Transcoding Wizard" by clicking on "File" and selecting "Streaming/Transcoding Wizard." Click "Transcode/Save to File" and click "Next."

4.Choose your input by clicking "Existing Playlist Item" and highlighting your WMV in the playlist window. Click "Next."

5.Click "Transcode Video" and "Transcode Audio" in the "Transcode" window. Change your "Transcode Video" codec to "H.264." Choose your output audio in the codec icon bar. Click "Next."

6.Choose your "Encapsulation Format." (For general conversions, VLC chooses one for you). Click "Next."

7.Click "Choose..." to determine your output file location. Click "Next."

8.Ensure your settings are correct in the "Summary" window. Click "Back" to change any settings. Click "Finish" to begin the transcoding process.

Tips & Warnings
Transcoding files may result in loss of audio/video quality, based on your files' properties and settings.
