Local Radio Stations Helping Promote Turkey Drive

Date:2015/12/11 10:42:50 Hits:
It was time to talk turkey this morning at American General Media radio in San Luis Obispo. Once again, the media company, which operates four stations in the county, is helping promote the KCOY Turkey Drive.

"It's a real important part of KZOZ and the American General Media Foundation to be a big part of the community and helping out with people in need," said Jeremy West, co-host of the KZOZ show, Jeff and Jeremy in the Morning.

Longtime local radio personality Andy Morris, who hosts shows on KJUG and Q104 has participated in several KCOY Turkey Drives through the years. He says the long running fundraiser is vitally important to the community.

"People in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County, they think here on the Central Coast that we have a little utopia going and people don't go hungry here, but it's not true, people go hungry every single day," said Morris.

Unfortunately, the need for turkeys and other food donations is greater this year than in the past.

"It can be anyone from a senior who has worked all their life, to a family with young children, and it's just really hard to meet your basic needs, let alone provide such a special meal," said Food Bank COO Wendy Lewis.

On Wednesday morning, Lewis, along with Food Bank Director of Community Relations Aracely Aceves Lozano, as well as KCOY reporter Dave Alley, made the rounds at AGM, speaking on several morning shows to help promote this week's Turkey Drive.

"Thanksgiving is a beautiful day to come together and we want to make sure everyone has that ability," said Lewis. "Can you imagine not being able to provide for your family? This gives somebody that ability to do that and really bring together the whole Thanksgiving message."

"This marks the 12th straight year KCOY has held the Turkey Drive," said Alley. "I've been fortunate to have taken part part in all of them and I'm proud the station has committed to helping out clients of both local organizations. Good Samaritan and Food Bank each serve such an important role in our community. It's great we can pitch in and support their efforts to provide a Thanksgiving meal to those families in need."

To help promote the event, American General Media will provide live broadcasts during the Turkey Drive. Q104.5 FM will broadcast from Albertsons in Paso Robles, while KZOZ 93.3 FM will be at California Fresh Market in Pismo Beach. Both stations will broadcast from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Krush 92.5 FM personalities Jeremy West and Adam Montiel, will broadcast their popular "Cork Dorks" show at Vons in San Luis Obispo from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

"This is one of our favorites, it's around the holidays," said West. "It's turkeys and we hope that we can get people to come out, whether you're on your way to work, you're on your lunch break, or on your way home and drop off one of these frozen turkeys."

For those like Morris, who have taken part in the Turkey Drive in past years, they say it's an amazing experience where you really get to see the community pull together as one.

"One of my favorite parts is when people start teaching their kids, so when you see mom and dad pull up in a car and that trunk pops open and three kids hop out and each kid grabs a turkey, it warms your heart," said Morris.

While AGM stations will broadcast in San Luis Obispo County, Knight Broadcasting will have two stations live on location in Santa Barbara County. Both KUHL 1440 AM and Mix 96.7 FM will broadcast from Turkey Drive locations.

"The promotion of the Turkey Drive through our radio partners is invaluable," said Alley, who serves as the KCOY Director of Community Affairs. "I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to both American General Media and Knight Broadcasting for helping us get the word out so we can collect as many turkeys as possible."

Turkeys collected in San Luis Obispo County will stay in the area and will be distributed by Food Bank to its agency partners, while those collected in Santa Barbara County will be distributed by Good Samaritan Shelter.

The KCOY Turkey Drive will be held Thursday, November 19 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Anyone can donate by visiting drop-off locations at the KCOY studio in Santa Maria, Lompoc City Hall, Albertsons in Paso Robles, Vons in San Luis Obispo and California Fresh Market in Pismo Beach.

For those who donate at the KCOY studio, Moxie Cafe will offer free breakfast sandwiches and coffee during the morning, while Cupcakes for Cancer will offer free cupcakes. In the afternoon, Moxie Cafe will provide complimentary chili will be available.
