Workers' Dignity Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Radio Station WDYO 104.1 FM
Date:2015/10/31 10:38:08 Hits:
Independent radio is looking pretty strong in Nashville, with WRFN blazing past its 10-year anniversary and WXNA steaming along toward opening its studio in the old Thirty Tigers space. With this much support for community-oriented broadcasting, the time is looking ripe for some of Nashville's least-heard residents to take the mic: the low-wage workers who clean our homes and offices, pick up our trash and generally make life a lot easier for everyone else. Enter Workers' Dignity, which combines the efforts of faith organizations, labor and immigrant advocacy groups and legal professionals. Since 2010, they've assisted in the recovery of $300,000 in stolen pay through demonstrations, class-action lawsuits and other education and awareness efforts. Earlier this year, the organization moved to a new building with room for a low-power FM radio station, which will be owned and operated by low-income individuals.
Not only will the station offer opportunities to hear news and opinions about issues related to wage equality and working conditions directly from the people who are affected, but it will also give them a chance to play a staggering variety of music, from samba to soul to socially conscious hip-hop, which doesn't fit into one of commercial radio's regimented formats.
Two years of work have yielded a build permit from the FCC, which means Workers' Dignity has until June 2016 to get radio station WDYO on the air at 104.1 FM. They're a couple of weeks into a Kickstarter campaign, and they're closing in on the halfway point of their initial goal. Anything beyond the $10,000 needed for the station build-out goes toward their projected $30,000 annual operating budget.
