RTE bosses are celebrating tonight after official radio figures reveal the station has made major gains. The latest Joint National Listenership Research (JNLR) numbers show RTE Radio 1 and 2fm have soared, while Denis O’Brien’s Today FM has struggled to keep a grip on its audience.
Chief among the victors was Marian Finucane’s Saturday show which has gained 23,000 in the last three months, taking the show’s total audience to 396,000. Year-on-year the number of people listening to the current affairs show on a Saturday has leaped by around 50,000.
Morning Ireland is still the most popular radio show on the island after its listenership grew by 6,000 to 439,000.
Joe Duffy’s Liveline increased by 2,000 to 371,000 and the News at One also saw a major hike – from 314,000 to 325,000 listeners.
Interestingly, Today with Seán O’Rourke has picked up 11,000 listeners in the most recent quarter, bringing his listenership to 328,000.
Today FM defector Ray D’Arcy has brought 9,000 extra listeners to RTE with 199,000 people tuning in every day.
Meanwhile, following his shift back to Radio 1, Ryan Tubridy has notched up an extra 11,000 listeners in the 9am to 10am slot now totalling 307,000.
And an extra 8,000 people moved the dial to Drivetime in the last three months bringing its current listenership to 226,000.
Claire Byrne’s Saturday lunchtime show has won an extra 10,000 listeners.
Over at 2fm the Nicky Byrne show has increased listeners by 13,000 to 163,000.
However, there was upset at Today FM where most of its flagship programmes have lost out.
