How Do I Convert HDMI Audio to RCA Audio

High-definition audio and visual technology is capable of transferring much more data than older analog technologies, providing you with sharper pictures and sounds. Most newer electronics, such as HDTVs, media computers and Blu-ray players, support high-definition signals sent via an HDMI cable.

Unfortunately, that high-definition technology isn't inherently compatible with older analog inputs like RCA audio jacks. If you ever need to convert an HDMI audio signal into an RCA audio signal -- for example, if you want to transfer music from your media PC to an older stereo system -- you're going to need to use an HDMI-to-RCA converter box.

Things You'll Need

HDMI-to-RCA converter box

Instructions

1.Turn off the HDMI output device and the device that accepts RCA inputs.

2.Connect the HDMI cable to the "HDMI Output" port on the output device and the "HDMI Input" port on the converter box.

3.Connect the red and white RCA audio cables to the "RCA Output" ports on the converter box and the "RCA Input" ports on the input device. Plug the red RCA jacks into the red ports and the white jacks into the white ports.

4.Plug in the HDMI-to-RCA converter box and power on the other two devices.

5.Play something on the HDMI device to see if you can hear it through the RCA device's speakers. Tweak the input/output source settings if no sound emerges -- set the high-definition device to send its signal via HDMI output and the RCA device to recognize the RCA Input. Follow the instructions for the specific device, as the exact procedure varies.

Tips & Warnings
Converter boxes also come with video outputs, such as yellow composite video ports and S-Video ports, so that you can convert the video portion of digital HDMI signals to work with analog hook-ups.
