How to Increase a Scanner Antenna Gain

Date:2014/9/28 9:42:42 Hits:
Your radio scanner's ability to pick up transmissions is only as good as its antenna. Without a good antenna, your listening range will be limited and your sound quality will be compromised. While buying a larger or better-tuned antenna is one way to improve your scanner's gain, you can also optimize your existing system by repositioning the antenna, accessorizing it to boost performance and/or improving its connection to your scanner.

Instructions

1.Move your antenna higher. Antenna gain is usually directly related to its distance from the ground. If it's inside on your desk, move it to the roof, and if it's already on your roof, add a mast to make it taller.

2.Upgrade the cable that connects your antenna to your scanner. Antenna signals are very weak, and if your cable picks up noise or loses part of the signal along the way, you're wasting your antenna's capabilities. A better cable will transmit more of what your antenna picks up.

3.Add an amplifier between your antenna and your scanner. Signal amplifiers increase the size of the signal that comes from your antenna. Note, however, that they also increase the strength of any noise that is carried by the cable.
