How to Build a High-powered Amplifier for a Stereo

Date:2014/9/11 14:17:27 Hits:
Building a high-powered amplifier for both car and home audio mostly involves knowledge the origin of the power source. Not all of stereo's power is derived from the amplifier. While it is true that the amplifier is designed specifically to give the stereo system extra power, the receiver and speakers also contribute to this power as well.

Things You'll Need

    * Stereo receiver
    * Stereo amplifier
    * Four to six speakers
    * Two to four subwoofers

Installing the Right Equipment

1.Identify the amount of power that your stereo receiver is equipped to handle. Typically you can find this number somewhere on the bottom of the stereo, and should appear in the form of 4X25, 4X20 or some other variation. The first number indicates the number of speakers that the power is proportioned to, and the second number indicates how much power is given to each speaker. Thus, a receiver with 4X25 watts of power has 100 watts of power total over four speakers. Base your choice of receiver on the number of speakers you will be installing.

2.Identify the amount of power with which your amplifier is equipped. Typically, amplifier power is noted in the same fashion as receiver power, with a certain portion routed through each speaker terminal. Since amplifiers are generally only used to power subwoofers, base your choice of amplifier on the number of subwoofer speakers that you have as well. If you only have two subwoofer speakers, but 180 watts of power in your amplifier proportioned over four speaker channels, then you will be wasting 90 watts of unused power in your amplifier.

3.Identify the amount of power that your speakers are capable of handling before building your high-powered amplifier. Cheap stereo speakers are often not capable of handling more than 50 watts of power each. To capitalize on the power of your amplifier and stereo receiver, pair the equipment with a set of speakers and subwoofers that can handle at least 200 watts of power each.
