How to Aim a TV Antenna Using a Compass
Date:2014/11/24 11:05:57 Hits:
Precise alignment of your television antenna is essential if you want to receive a strong over-the-air digital-television signal on all available channels. Digital TV signals on some channels will drop out completely if your antenna doesn't point in the right direction. One way to lock on to a strong and reliable signal is to find the correct bearing for your nearest TV transmitter with a TV antenna pointer website and use a directional compass to aim the antenna.Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Wrench
Directional compass
Instructions
1.Launch your Web browser and go to an antenna pointer TV reception assistance website, such as AntennaWeb or TV Fool. Enter your ZIP code or address into the input box to get the correct compass bearing for your TV antenna.
2.Switch off all television and video equipment, and disconnect it from the AC power outlets.
3.Climb to the TV antenna site. Depending on the height and position of the antenna, use steps, a ladder or a platform.
4.Unscrew the bolts or screws on the mast clamp that connects the TV antenna array to the mast. Use a wrench or screwdriver to loosen the bolts or screws by about a half-turn, or by enough to allow you to rotate the antenna.
5.Find the correct bearing for the TV transmitter with the directional compass. Rest the compass on the central rod of the antenna so that you can see the compass dial as you rotate the antenna.
6.Move the antenna gently until the needle on the compass lines up with the transmitter bearing.
7.Tighten the mast clamp screws or bolts with your wrench or screwdriver.
Tips & Warnings
Always position the TV antenna above with a clear view toward the transmitter. In most cases, mount the antenna above the roofline for optimal reception.
Once you've aligned the antenna, check that you can receive all available channels on your TV set. In weak television reception areas, you might need to attach a digital-television signal meter to your antenna to lock on to the strongest possible signal.
Always place platforms and ladders on firm, flat ground. Get a neighbor, friend or family member to hold the ladder while you align the TV antenna.
