Microwave power module provides switchable Ka/Q-band for UAV data links

Link Microtek offers a switchable Ka/Q-band microwave power module that provides compact power-amplifier functionality for defence and aerospace applications.

The M2837, designed and manufactured by L-3 Electron Devices, delivers more than 100W of saturated CW power at Ka-band frequencies from 29.5 to 31GHz and over 80W at Q-band frequencies from 43.5 to 45.5GHz. It is, says the company, suitable for satellite communication uplinks in UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles).

The 28V DC-input module combines a solid-state driver amplifier, a miniature helix travelling wave tube and a power supply in a rugged 248 x 216 x 38mm package that weighs only 3.3kg. A single 2.4mm coaxial connector is used for the RF input and a WR24 waveguide is used for the output.

It complies with MIL-STD-461 EMC standard and is equipped with a forward and reverse power coupler. It offers both RS485 and TTL signalling for status monitoring and control. Operating temperature is -40 to 85°C. A forced-air heat exchanger is available as an option.
