How to Create a Radio Broadcast Online
Radio is still a popular source of news and entertainment--despite the arrival of television and the Internet. Take your passion for audio broadcasting online with a radio broadcast hosted online. Depending on your audience and your needs, you may choose a free server that will broadcast your show in real time, or you may create an audio file on your computer and upload to a specific Website as a podcast that can be listened to several times and even downloaded onto other people's computers.
Instructions
1.Create audio content with an Apple computer. Regardless of whether you choose to stream your show or create a podcast, you will need to first create the audio content, whether it be an interview or a stream of songs with you acting as a disc jockey. If you have a Mac computer with a built-in microphone and the application GarageBand, creating the content is as easy as speaking into your computer. Simply open GarageBand and select "New Project." Once your timeline is open, click the red "Record" button and begin speaking. Add a musical background or other audio content by simply clicking and dragging. When you're done editing, simply choose "Export" from the Preferences menu and select "Export as Podcast," which will create an audio file to be saved on your computer and either streamed or uploaded to a website.
2.Create audio content with a Personal Computer. Users on a Windows platform will need to use Windows Sound Recorder. If you have a built-in or plug-in microphone, you can record straight to this program. If not, you will have to use a digital recorder to capture sound, upload files to your computer and then import into Sound Recorder. With this program, you can add effects and change the volume of your audio file before saving. Note that you cannot make changes after you save.
3.Stream content. If you'd like your radio broadcast to resemble a traditional radio program, online streaming is the option for you. ShoutCast is a website that makes it easy to host free online content. Visit their website at www.shoutcast.com to find out more about their services. To get started, you'll download a program onto your PC or Mac that will allow you to upload your audio content. Listeners from all over the world can then find your station on their Radio Directory and listen to your radio broadcasts.
Users with an Apple computer may opt to go with the QuickTime Streaming Server, which creates QuickTime files out of audio or video content.
4.Create a podcast. For Website operators that want to add their radio broadcast to an established site, a podcast may be a better option. Whether you used a Mac or PC, your audio content will be in MP3 form, which is easily uploadable to many content management systems, including WordPress. To upload to that site, simply click "Add Audio" while in the "Post" screen. You will be able to browse your computer and upload the MP3. Other websites will allow you to add the audio in a similar fashion. Users need only right-click the audio to download onto their computers as well.
